Ruby’s Journey: A Life-Saving Splenectomy and the Power of Early Detection
General

Meet Ruby
Ruby is a sweet, loving German Shepherd mix who was rescued after being found as a stray in Labelle, Florida. When she arrived at the shelter, Ruby tested positive for heartworm disease, a serious condition that, thankfully, she successfully overcame through treatment provided by the shelter.
In 2024, she was adopted by her devoted owner, Mr. Behrens, who has gone above and beyond to ensure her continued health. Mr. Behrens provides Ruby with monthly heartworm prevention and regular testing every six months. His commitment to her well-being has been unwavering.
The Unexpected Diagnosis
In May 2025, Ruby visited her referring veterinarian (rDVM) for what seemed like a routine issue: loose stool. During her exam, the veterinarian noticed a large mass on Ruby’s spleen during radiographs. Understanding the potential severity, the rDVM quickly referred Ruby to our hospital for further evaluation.
On May 20, 2025, Ruby was seen by Dr. Rudd in our surgery department. A thorough physical exam and abdominal ultrasound confirmed the presence of a large splenic mass. Fortunately, no additional masses or signs of spread were detected.
Given Ruby’s stable condition and the urgency of the situation, we scheduled surgery for the very next day.
Surgical Success
Ruby underwent a splenectomy on May 21, 2025. During the procedure, our surgical team successfully removed the spleen and the attached mass, which was approximately the size of an orange. The spleen was sent in its entirety for histopathological analysis to determine the nature of the mass.
Throughout her hospital stay, Ruby was an exemplary patient; friendly, affectionate, and resilient. She quickly won the hearts of our entire team.
Recovery and Follow-Up
Ruby recovered smoothly after surgery and has continued to do well under her owner’s attentive care. Histopathology results have been posted to her medical record and will be reviewed by our veterinary team to determine any next steps in her long-term care plan.
Ruby’s case is a powerful example of why staying vigilant about your pet’s health, especially when symptoms seem minor, can truly save lives.
Why This Case Matters
This case underscores several key points:
Early diagnostics can change everything.
What appeared to be a simple gastrointestinal issue led to the discovery of a life-threatening condition.
Timely surgical intervention saves lives.
