Labor Day Hazards for Pets: Keep Your Furry Friends Safe This Holiday

Labor Day weekend is a time for celebration: backyard barbecues, pool parties, and quality time with family and friends. But while you're enjoying the long weekend, it’s important to remember that holiday festivities can pose serious risks to your pets.

At Florida Veterinary Referral Center (FVRC), we see an increase in emergency visits around holidays like Labor Day. To help you avoid a trip to the ER, we’ve put together a list of common hazards and essential tips to keep your furry family members safe and healthy.

1. BBQ & Picnic Dangers

The Risk: Cookouts often involve tempting foods that can be toxic or dangerous to pets. Items like ribs, chicken bones, corn cobs, fatty meats, onions, garlic, and alcohol can all cause severe digestive issues or blockages.

FVRC Tip:

  • Keep trash cans tightly sealed and food out of paw’s reach.

  • Remind guests not to feed your pets, even small scraps can cause problems.

  • If your pet accidentally ingests something harmful, call FVRC immediately at (239) 992-8878.

2. Heat & Dehydration

The Risk: Southwest Florida’s late-summer heat can be dangerous, especially during outdoor celebrations. Pets can suffer from heatstroke faster than humans, especially breeds with short snouts like Bulldogs, Pugs, and Persians.

FVRC Tip:

  • Always provide plenty of fresh, cool water.

  • Limit outdoor time during peak heat hours (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.).

  • Watch for signs of heat exhaustion: excessive panting, drooling, lethargy, vomiting, or collapse.

  • If you suspect heatstroke, seek emergency care immediately.

3. Fireworks & Loud Noises

The Risk: Many people celebrate Labor Day with fireworks, which can cause extreme anxiety in pets and may even lead to escape attempts or injuries.

FVRC Tip:

  • Keep pets indoors in a secure, quiet space during fireworks.

  • Consider using white noise machines or calming music.

  • Ask your veterinarian about anti-anxiety solutions if your pet struggles with noise phobias.

4. Water Safety for Pool & Beach Days

The Risk: Whether you’re at the beach, pool, or on a boat, drowning is a real danger for pets, even strong swimmers. Saltwater and pool chemicals can also cause stomach upset if ingested.

FVRC Tip:

  • Use a pet life jacket when boating.

  • Always supervise pets near water.

  • Rinse off salt, chlorine, or sand to prevent skin irritation.

  • Bring fresh drinking water so your pet doesn’t consume pool or ocean water.

5. Travel & Crowds

The Risk: With more people traveling over Labor Day, pets may face extra stress, motion sickness, or risk of getting lost in crowded areas.

FVRC Tip:

  • Ensure your pet’s microchip and ID tags are up to date.

  • Secure pets in a crate or harness while traveling.

  • Bring along familiar items like blankets or toys to reduce anxiety.
