Hurricane Preparedness for Pets: Keeping Your Furry Family Safe
September 8, 2025 · Pet Safety

At Florida Veterinary Referral Center (FVRC), we know how stressful hurricane season can be for Southwest Florida families, and that includes our pets. With hurricane activity peaking from June through November, it’s crucial to have a plan in place to keep your furry, feathered, and scaly family members safe before, during, and after the storm.
FVRC is here to help you prepare. Here’s everything you need to know to make sure your pets stay safe when severe weather strikes.
1. Make a Pet Emergency Kit
Just like your family, your pets need their own emergency supplies. Pack a pet hurricane kit and store it in an easy-to-grab, waterproof container. Include:
At least 3–5 days of food and water
Medications and copies of prescriptions
Vaccination and medical records
Collar, leash, and ID tags
A sturdy crate or carrier for each pet
Waste bags, litter, and cleaning supplies
Comfort items like blankets and toys
FVRC Tip: Make sure your pet’s microchip information and ID tags are up to date in case you’re separated.
2. Know Your Evacuation Plan
Before a storm approaches, find out which pet-friendly shelters or hotels are nearby. Many standard shelters do not accept animals, so planning ahead is essential.
Here are a few resources for pet-friendly evacuation options in Lee and Collier Counties:
FVRC Reminder: Never leave your pets behind during an evacuation. If it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for them.
3. Prepare Your Home for Pets
Hurricanes can cause sudden flooding, flying debris, and power outages. To keep your pets safe at home:
Bring pets indoors well before the storm arrives.
Create a safe, windowless area where pets can stay securely.
Keep carriers and leashes nearby for quick evacuation if needed.
Make sure your pet is comfortable with their crate ahead of time.
4. Have a Veterinary Emergency Plan
Storms often cause injuries, anxiety, or medical emergencies in pets. At FVRC, our 24/7 Emergency & Specialty Veterinary Hospital is fully equipped to handle urgent situations, even during severe weather when other clinics may be closed.
